چکیده

The polarization-lidar photometer networking (POLIPHON) method for separating dust and non-dust aerosol backscatter and extinction, volume, and mass concentration is extended to allow for a height-resolved separation of fine-mode and coarse-mode dust properties in addition. The method is applied to a period with complex aerosol layering of fine-mode background dust from Turkey and Arabian desert dust from Syria. The observation was performed at the combined European Aerosol Research Lidar Network (EARLINET) and Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) site of Limassol (34.7 N, 33 E), Cyprus, in September 2011. The dust profiling methodology and case studies are presented. Consistency between the columnintegrated optical properties obtained with sun/sky photometer and the respective results derived by means of the new lidar-based method corroborate the applicability of the extended POLIPHON version.

Evaluation of the Lidar/Radiometer Inversion Code (LIRIC) to determine microphysical properties of volcanic and desert dust

The Lidar/Radiometer Inversion Code (LIRIC) combines the multiwavelength lidar technique with sun/sky photometry and allows us to retrieve vertical profiles of particle optical and microphysical properties separately for finemode and coarse-mode particles. After a brief presentation of the theoretical background, we evaluate the potential of LIRIC to retrieve the optical and microphysical prope...

Profiling of fine and coarse particle mass: case studies of Saharan dust and Eyjafjallajökull/Grimsvötn volcanic plumes

The polarization lidar photometer networking (POLIPHON) method introduced to separate coarse-mode and fine-mode particle properties of Eyjafjallajökull volcanic aerosols in 2010 is extended to cover Saharan dust events as well. Furthermore, new volcanic dust observations performed after the Grimsvötn volcanic eruptions in 2011 are presented. The retrieval of particle mass concentrations require...

Separation of aerosol fine- and coarse-mode radiative properties: Effect on the mineral dust longwave, direct radiative forcing

An improvement of the estimation of mineral dust longwave, direct radiative forcing is presented. It is based on recent developments that combine Sun photometer and multiwavelength lidar data to retrieve range-resolved coarseand fine-mode extinction coefficients. The forcings are calculated separately for each mode, and their sum is compared to the classical approach in which only the total ext...

Dust aerosol emission over the Sahara during summertime from Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) observations

Dust aerosols are an important component of the climate system and a challenge to incorporate into weather and climate models. Information on the location and magnitude of dust emission remains a key information gap to inform model development. Inadequate surface observations ensure that satellite data remain the primary source of this information over extensive and remote desert regions. Here,...

Remote sensing of vertical distributions of smoke aerosol off the coast of Africa

[1] In 2004 NASA plans to launch the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations— CALIPSO mission, with a two-wavelength lidar aboard. CALIPSO will fly in formation with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-Radiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite. Here we present inversions of combined aircraft lidar and MODIS data to study the properties of smoke off the southwest co...
